Porsche 911 2.2 S
"A Porsche 911 is the best car in the world to drive. It’s as if it understands you, and you understand it.”
Walter Röhrl.
In the early 1970s, the automotive world was undergoing a transformative period. The post-war boom had created a generation of drivers who demanded more from their cars: precision, performance, practicality, and excitement. In response to this, Porsche introduced the 911 in 1964.
Soon after, Porsche unveiled the 911 2.2 S, which improved performance and handling, solidifying its reputation as one of the most desirable sports cars at the time. One of the many well known figures to have been capture by the car's allure was none other than Steve McQueen, the "King of cool", whose 1971 film Le Mans opens with a stunning tribute to his own Slate Gray Porsche 911 2.2 S. The first four minutes show him driving through the French countryside, the flat-six engine’s rumble accompanying him to Le Mans. A passionate racer, McQueen owned several Porsches, including a 917 in the iconic Gulf livery, further cementing his passion for the brand.
The Porsche 911 2.2 S was among the first production Porsche to feature the iconic Fuchs wheels. Designed in collaboration with Otto Fuchs KG, these forged aluminum alloy wheels were revolutionary, significantly reducing unsprung weight while maintaining exceptional strength and durability. Their distinctive five-spoke design became a defining visual element of the 911 lineage.
Beyond aesthetics, Porsche engineers also addressed the car’s weight bias, initially adding cast-iron counterweights in the front bumper. However, with the introduction of the 2.2 S, they implemented a more elegant solution: relocating two batteries to the front trunk, one on each side. This adjustment improved overall stability and responsiveness, making the 911 2.2 S a more predictable and confidence-inspiring sports car on both road and track.
