BMW Z8 Roadster
This BMW Z8 Roadster and James Bond share more than just a registration plate. They embody precision, confidence, and elegance. In Bond’s hands, the Z8 becomes an extension of his instincts, responding without hesitation.
The BMW Z8 was featured in the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, driven by Pierce Brosnan as 007. The car was chosen as part of BMW’s product placement deal with the Bond franchise in the 1990s, following the BMW Z3 (GoldenEye, 1995) and the BMW 750iL (Tomorrow Never Dies, 1997).
The Z8 fit Bond’s image with its elegant yet powerful design, paying homage to classic roadsters like the BMW 507. The Z8 was silver, just like this one. It was equipped with several Q-branch modifications, including surface-to-air missiles hidden in the side vents and a remote-control system.
In the film, the Z8 is primarily seen in a mountainside sequence where Bond confronts assassins using a helicopter equipped with massive cutting saws. The Z8’s appearance was memorable, solidifying its place as a Bond car and elevating its status as a modern collectible.
The Z8 was developed under the codename "E52" between 1993 and 1999 through the efforts of a design team led by Chris Bangle from 1993 to 1995. The exterior was designed by Henrik Fisker, while the interior was created by Scott Lempert.
Prototypes were spotted during testing between 1996 and 1999. A concept car, named the Z07, was developed as a preview of the Z8 and was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1997.
The engine is positioned behind the front axle to provide the car with a 50/50 weight distribution. The factory-reported acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) is 4.7 seconds.
To cement the appeal of the Z8 among collectors, BMW committed to maintaining a stock of spare parts for 50 years. Moreover, due to the limited production volume, all components of the car were either handcrafted or hand-finished, making long-term manufacturer support essential.
